The LIMA / Spike Mason Jazz Jam No.1 at Saint John Craft Beer

With the support of City of Launceston and in the spirit of community and jazz Launceston Improvised Music Association (LIMA) is excited to present the first Jazz Jam event at Saint John Craft Beer on Sunday 11th October.
Featuring house band Jonno Warner (keys), Simon Deeth (double bass) and Spike Mason (saxophone) we invite community musicians to join in for a tune or two, bring a song you know, play a jazz standard or try something completely new with the support of the Spike Mason Trio. Jazz musicians of any level of experience are welcome to join.
How it works… From 2 - 3pm musicians are invited to join the Trio in the back room at Saint John Bar to set up, chat about the process, workshop some tunes, and decide on a 2 set program which will run from 3 - 5pm.
Free for participating musicians - voice or instrument. $10 on the door for audience members. (3 -5pm)
This will be an afternoon program of jazz and jazz ensembles that you’ve never heard before and may never hear again!

Ever wondered what the abundant reefs around Tasmania sound like? Emily Sheppard has been recording underwater sounds of the Great Southern Reef for the past few years. She will bring her hydrophone recordings for us to listen to and learn about the sounds made. Snapping shrimp tend to dominate the soundscape of healthy reef environments.
Emily will share recordings of work she has created with hydrophone recordings and violin, providing a taster of what is possible. Then, in small groups of 3-4, we will improvise sound and music in response to the recordings, and with the recordings. We will chat together about what each group attempted to do, and what the listeners noticed about the sound data and music during the improvisations.
A second workshop will be held on Friday, Nov. 6, as part of The World’s Smallest Improvised Music Festival, followed by a performance by Emily. Saturday, Nov 7, will feature an artist talk with Emily at midday
$10 for 1 workshop or both.
