John Coltrane Tribute “Supreme Love”

Spike Mason Band present

Sunday 13th July 2025

The Royal Oak Launceston

4 - 6pm

A tribute to ‘A Love Supreme’ by John Coltrane on the 60th year Anniversary of the classic jazz albums' release.

A Love Supreme was released in 1965 and is recognised as John Coltrane's spiritual jazz masterpiece. The 4-part suite is a collection of deep chant-like grooves that underpin majestic solos drawn from melodic exhortations. The album, recorded by the John Coltrane Quartet, audibly changed the sonic landscape of modern music. It became an undeniable influence on musicians from the worlds of jazz, pop, and classical music, and continues to be so.

This tribute comprises of a 7 piece ensemble - of new arrangements and imaginings of the original 4 Coltrane pieces, with an additional 4 original pieces composed by myself, Stevie McEntee, Louise Denson, and Sasha Gavlek. The new work will echo the spirit of the original recording, but within the context of a modern Tasmanian demographic. Featuring male, female, and gender diverse artists in ages ranging from their 20s to their 60s.

Her compositions have won awards and recognition, and have been performed and recorded by artists far and wide, including Downbeat poll-winning trombonist Bill Watrous, Bell Award-winning vocalist Elly Hoyt, Queensland-based Viney-Grinberg Duo, Muses Trio and Southern Cross Soloists.

Louise’s recent musical activity here includes regular gigs in Hobart and beyond, and composition commissions for the Richmond Tasmania Bicentenary (2023), Clarence Jazz Festival (2023) and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (2022). The inventive Danish/Australian trio Number Junky from Perth have become known for combining exciting rhythms and odd-time signatures with lyrical melodies and lush harmony. Led by international acclaimed guitarist Kristian Borring (“post-bop wizard” – Vintage Guitars) and the “hip and capable” (Ivan Rod) rhythm section of Zac Grafton and Peter Evans, the group portray earthiness and complexity in composition and improvisation with exciting and cutting-edge original jazz tunes and re-workings of standards. Their latest offering, the album ‘Birak’, a nod to the seasons of the first nations ‘Noongar’ people in WA, was recorded on the back of the trio’s last tour of the Eastern States, is praised for its memorable themes and great playing (Dingo Jazz) and dedication to tightly woven interplay (Rhythms Magazine). Number Junky has also become known for their monthly residency in Perth, The Villa House Sessions, and their numerous collaborations with names such as Fabian Almazan, Will Vinson and Jamie Oehlers.
